The Rector of Universitas Syiah Kuala, Banda Aceh, Indonesia, since 2012. Samsul Rizal joined Universitas Syiah Kuala as a lecturer at the Department of Mechanical Engineering in 1988. From 2006 to 2012, Samsul Rizal was appointed as a Vice Rector for Academic Affairs. In 2001, Toyahashi City has appointed Samsul Rizal as a Toyohashi Goodwill Ambassador.
Samsul Rizal chaired the World Class Professor (WCP) Program, granted by the Ministry of Research, Technology, and Higher Education (MoRTHE) of the Republic of Indonesia in 2018 and 2019, respectively. Samsul Rizal also received the 2018 Academic Leader Award from the MoRTHE. Research interests include fracture mechanics, computational mechanics, and damage mechanism of composite structure.
